Description
Bornova is a highly urbanized city with a mix of regions that include various university campuses, industrial zones, and trade zones. Bornova Municipality has a Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SKEP) dating back to 2013. Since the preparation of GAP, Bornova has been feeling the effects of climate change beyond sustainable energy. Beyond a single energy-driven approach, the city needs a more comprehensive Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP) to include water scarcity, vulnerability assessment and mitigation plans.
Heidelberg is a historic university town dedicated to making the transition to climate neutrality. The city received the European Sustainable Cities Award and the Global Green City Award twice in 2015. The city is internationally recognised for its “Bahnstadt” district, one of the largest passive home regions in the world today, and for measures to use rainwater. City Twinning is long-term, and partner cities aim to initiate twinning by focusing on climate change action through the project.
This project aims to develop capacity for the Bornova Municipality through the exchange of ideas between the Bornova Municipality and the EU local authorities of the Municipality of Heidelberg, and to increase awareness of the sustainable urban environment in the general public.
